Getting kids motivated to practice is nearly impossible.
The only way to develop players is to give them an environment in which they want to learn!
After coaching for many years, I believe that the best way for kids to learn is thru small sided games, providing players with lots of ball contact, and providing the coach with lots of coaching point opportunities.
Adjust the rules and styles of the game to suit various coaching points. It is really quite easy once you get the hang of it. eg have 2 goals spead wide apart for an attacking team to promote switching the ball.
It is also vital to make sure that players are in groups of similar ability, so the coach does not need to concentrate on lesser skilled players at the expense of more skilled players.
Take a look at my review of the Coerver coaching method, where I have discovered a great way to coach kids using the Coerver Coaching System, The Principles of Play and Small Sided Games.

Great article. Watching the game is a very important thing for youth players. youth-soccer-coach.blogspot.com always lists nationally televised professional games for players to watch.
