Coaching Youth Soccer – The Need for Speed »

If you have been [tag-tec]coaching youth soccer[/tag-tec] for a while, you would have realized by now the importance speed plays in the game, however were you aware that there are three elements of [tag-tec]soccer speed[/tag-tec] that a good player should demonstrate to further his development in this great game. When you think of [tag-tec]soccer speed[/tag-tec], the first thing that probably comes to mind is the ability to run fast and get to the ball first. This is essential, however this is only one of the three crucial elements that are required. The other two elements are…

1. Speed of control
2. Speed of thought (decision making)

Speed of movement (running)

It is important that you are fast on you feet when playing [tag-tec]soccer[/tag-tec]. [tag-tec]Soccer speed training[/tag-tec] is conditioning your body to cope with moving at a high rate of speed over a period of time, either short or long distance. Soccer players need to develop a good running technique in order not to waste energy in certain situations. No matter what position the player plays in, extra speed will be an advantage. Speed over the first 10 meters is critical in soccer. The first player to the ball will win the ball. It is estimated that a player may spend up to as much as 12% of the game sprinting. This means that fitness will play a big part in the player’s preparation. [tag-tec]Soccer speed training[/tag-tec] should be incorporated into every soccer training program session, with an emphasis on technique.

Speed of control

This element of soccer speed can also be referred to as ‘skill speed’. This refers to a player’s ability to execute certain movements on the field with and without the ball. A soccer player is required to demonstrate a skill quickly, to bring the ball under control and then make a decision as to how the ball will be delivered. This speed of control can be practiced at soccer training by performing specific soccer drills and skills. An important aspect of coaching this at training is to ensure the player is put under pressure as he would be in a game.

Speed of thought (decision making)

Another element of [tag-tec]soccer speed[/tag-tec] is decision making. Why is there a need for speed of thought when playing soccer? Soccer is both a mental and physical game. When you play soccer, you need to focus your mind on the game and think quickly. There are many factors that a soccer player needs to take into account during a game including the position of your opponents and your teammates. Speed of anticipation is very important especially when you are doing defensive movements. A soccer player needs to learn to think quickly and anticipate what the other players will do next in given situations. As much as the speed of thought applies to a player, it is also relevant for any soccer coach. When [tag-tec]coaching youth soccer[/tag-tec], you need to be able to react quickly and make changes as required. You will be the ‘go to’ person for the team when things are not going well.

Speed in soccer should not be ignored. Speed of movement, speed of control and speed of thought are all integral to the development of a good soccer player. To be in a position to execute all these characteristics of soccer speed, a player needs to be fit. If the player is not fit, everything slows down, tiredness and fatigue takes over, resulting in poor execution.

Some time ago, when I was looking for some help on developing a [tag-tec]speed training program[/tag-tec] incorporating [tag-tec]soccer fitness[/tag-tec], I came across a resource, that on the face of it looked suitable. After looking through it, I liked it that much I applied the techniques and drills to both the teams I coach and incorporated it into my [tag-tec]soccer training program[/tag-tec]. I would go as far to say, that it is essential reading for any soccer parent and anyone coaching youth soccer. It covers all the drills and exercises you need to assist in developing the three elements of soccer speed I discussed above, including when you should incorporate soccer speed training into your coaching plan. In addition, the book covers everything that a soccer coach, parent and player needs to know on soccer fitness and nutrition.
